Every hotel and restaurant on this site carries a "Checked" date. This is what that date actually means, how we get there, and what we do when the facts don't line up cleanly.
Four Things This Guide Commits To
We Check Directly
Every listing's address, amenities, price tier, and ratings are checked against the business's own official site and, where available, Google or TripAdvisor — never copied from another directory.
We Don't Guess
No invented nightly rates and no assumed amenities. A price tier plus a real availability link instead of a stale number; "unconfirmed" instead of a guess.
We Disclose Disagreement
When two sources genuinely conflict, the profile says so directly. Smoothing over a disagreement isn't more useful — it's just harder to trust.
We Date Everything
Every profile carries a real "Checked" date: when the facts were last verified, not when the page was first written. Stale-but-honest beats fresh-looking but false.
Why This Guide Exists
Most Oxford accommodation and dining content online falls into one of two categories: aggregator listings with no local judgement behind them, or brochure copy written by the businesses themselves. This site tries to be a third thing: real neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood depth, the same amenity and getting-there detail for every hotel and every restaurant, and a willingness to say plainly when something couldn't be confirmed rather than papering over the gap with confident-sounding filler. That standard only means anything if it's checkable, which is the point of this page. As of the last full pass, 32 real hotels and restaurants carry this treatment, not a sample of them.
When Something's Unconfirmed
Sources genuinely disagree sometimes: an aggregator lists a hotel amenity the hotel's own site doesn't mention, or two review platforms show meaningfully different ratings for the same address. When that happens, we say so directly in the profile rather than picking whichever version sounds better. Where a rating has genuinely changed between two independent checks (a real drop or rise, not a typo), the profile notes that directly rather than silently overwriting the old figure.
The Map And Walk Times
Every hotel and restaurant on the interactive map, and every walk-time shown in a Journey & Neighbourhood panel or the Plan Your Trip tool, comes from the same underlying set of real geocoded coordinates: not three separately estimated numbers, one dataset used three ways. Walk times use straight-line distance with a route-inefficiency allowance, which makes them good for comparing options relative to each other, not a substitute for a routed turn-by-turn estimate from a maps app on the day.
Seasonal And Calendar Content
Oxford's academic calendar drives real, predictable demand: May Day, Eights Week, and graduation weekends move to different dates most years. The Events & Academic Calendar page states this directly and points to the University's own published dates rather than assuming last year's timing still holds — a date-driven page is only trustworthy if it's honest about needing an annual re-check, and we treat it that way.
Independence
This is an editorially independent guide: every hotel and restaurant is covered on its own merits, and we take no commission on any booking. The site carries one editorial partner placement (disclosed in the footer) and a monthly hospitality-jobs feed sourced from Adzuna's public API (disclosed on that page) — neither influences how a hotel or restaurant is described or rated.
